MHA Invokes Emergency Powers Nationwide Amid Operation Sindoor

As India’s military response under Operation Sindoor intensifies following Pakistan’s provocations, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has formally directed all states and Union Territories to invoke emergency powers under the Civil Defence Rules. The advisory is aimed at ensuring swift and effective implementation of precautionary and security-related measures across the country.

In an official communication sent to all Chief Secretaries and UT Administrators, the MHA has urged the use of statutory powers granted under the Civil Defence Act to maintain public safety and support operational readiness in the event of further escalations.

MHA Emergency Directive Under Operation Sindoor

The decision follows heightened threats along the western front and multiple reports of attempted drone strikes, missile attacks, and border infiltrations by Pakistan. The MHA’s move is intended to facilitate coordinated action by civil authorities to manage public movement, secure critical infrastructure, and maintain law and order during this sensitive period.

The invocation of emergency powers allows state and UT administrations to impose curfews, conduct evacuations, deploy rapid response teams, and enforce restrictions on large gatherings and public access in vulnerable zones without delay. It also empowers local authorities to requisition resources and personnel as needed for national security efforts.

National Preparedness as Conflict Grows

The Home Ministry’s directive is being viewed as a preemptive but necessary step, considering the volatile situation after India’s air and missile strikes on terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Several Indian cities, particularly in northern regions, have already reported power disruptions and increased troop movements as part of broader security preparedness.

With Pakistan continuing to launch provocations, including drone attacks on civilian areas like Jammu and retaliatory shelling along the Line of Control, the government has escalated internal readiness protocols to prevent and manage any civilian impact.

The MHA has clarified that these measures are purely precautionary and essential to protect life and infrastructure while the Indian Armed Forces neutralize cross-border threats. Civil administrations have been instructed to ensure full coordination with defence forces and maintain communication with the public to avoid panic.

The invocation of civil defence powers across India is one of the most sweeping internal security responses in recent years, reflecting the seriousness of the situation as Operation Sindoor enters its next phase.
