Marco Rubio Says US Ties With India Remain Strategic
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington’s tactical relations with other countries will not come at the expense of its strategic partnership with India. The remarks came during his visit to New Delhi amid efforts to address recent strains in India-U.S. ties.
Rubio Calls India A Key Strategic Partner
Rubio said the United States works with several countries at a tactical level, but those engagements should not be seen as weakening Washington’s relationship with India.
His comments appeared aimed at reassuring New Delhi at a time when India has raised concerns over U.S. engagement with Pakistan and other regional players. Rubio described India as one of America’s most important strategic partners and said the relationship was central to Washington’s wider foreign policy approach.
India-US Talks Cover Trade And Defence
Rubio held talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, with discussions covering trade, defence cooperation, energy security, technology, nuclear collaboration and the Indo-Pacific.
Jaishankar underlined the importance of building defence ties through the Make in India approach. Both sides also discussed ongoing efforts to finalise a sustainable trade understanding that would benefit both countries.
Trust Deficit Remains A Key Challenge
The visit comes at a time when India-U.S. relations have faced pressure over tariffs, energy policy, Pakistan-related concerns and differing strategic priorities.
Rubio’s remarks suggest Washington is trying to reassure India that short-term tactical contacts with other countries will not undermine the broader bilateral partnership. However, rebuilding trust may take time, especially as both sides continue to manage trade disputes and geopolitical differences.
