Marco Rubio Says Global System Failing on Major Conflicts
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said the current international system is failing to resolve major conflicts, citing potential India-Pakistan tensions and the recent Thailand-Cambodia war as examples of crises that global institutions struggle to address.
Rubio Says International System Is Broken
Speaking during the high-level UN General Assembly week in New York, Rubio said there was broad agreement among world leaders that the international system was no longer functioning effectively.
He argued that institutions had expanded beyond their original mandate while becoming less capable of addressing major security challenges.
Rubio said the United Nations still had significant potential but was not currently living up to it, calling for international institutions to return to a clearer and more effective role.
India-Pakistan Conflict Cited as Example
Rubio referred to a potential conflict between India and Pakistan while explaining the type of crisis he believes a functioning international system should be capable of addressing.
His remarks came a day after President Donald Trump again claimed that his administration helped end the India-Pakistan military confrontation in 2025.
India has consistently rejected claims of third-party mediation, maintaining that the cessation of hostilities was agreed directly between the Directors General of Military Operations of India and Pakistan.
US Says National Interest Comes First
Rubio stressed that his criticism was not a rejection of international institutions themselves.
However, he said that when international mechanisms fail, individual countries will inevitably act according to their own national interests.
He added that under the Trump administration, the United States would not place the interests of the international order above its own national priorities.
