Mallikarjun Kharge Targets BJP Over Assam Floods
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge has criticised the BJP-led Centre and Assam government over the state’s continuing flood crisis, questioning the implementation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s promise to make Assam flood-free.
Kharge Questions Flood-Free Assam Promise
Kharge referred to Shah’s earlier assurance that Assam’s recurring flood problem would be resolved within five years. He accused the BJP of failing to deliver on the commitment as large parts of the state remained affected by severe monsoon flooding.
The Congress leader said repeated promises had not translated into sufficient flood-control measures, leaving residents vulnerable to displacement, property damage and loss of livelihoods.
Assam Floods Affect Over Five Lakh People
The death toll from floods and related incidents in Assam has risen to 68. More than 5.24 lakh people across several districts remained affected, with hundreds of villages and large areas of agricultural land submerged.
Although water levels showed signs of receding in some areas, many families continued to depend on relief camps and government assistance. Rescue, rehabilitation and infrastructure restoration operations remained underway across the affected districts.
Congress Demands Immediate Flood Relief
Kharge urged the Union and Assam governments to mobilise all available resources for rescue, relief and rehabilitation. He also demanded substantial financial assistance for affected families and adequate compensation for those who lost relatives, homes and livelihoods.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed grief over the deaths and called for faster support for flood-hit communities.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured Assam of full assistance from the Centre for ongoing relief and recovery operations.
