L&T Eyes Fighter Jet Production to Support IAF
Larsen & Toubro (L&T), a leading private-sector defense manufacturer in India, has expressed its interest in establishing a production line for indigenous fighter jets. This initiative is aimed at addressing the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) growing aircraft shortage, which has become a critical concern for national security. “We are fully prepared to manufacture fighter aircraft and contribute to India’s defense self-reliance,” an L&T official stated.
IAF Faces Fighter Jet Shortage
The Indian Air Force is currently operating at a significantly reduced capacity, with only 31 active fighter squadrons against the required 42. Several aging aircraft, including MiG-21s, Jaguars, and older Mirage 2000s, are set to be retired in the coming years. The IAF has projected the need for at least 450 new fighter jets over the next 15 years to maintain its combat strength.
To bridge this gap, the IAF has already placed an order for 180 Tejas Mk1A aircraft, with deliveries expected to begin in 2025 and conclude within seven years. Additionally, the upcoming Tejas MkII, a 4.5-generation medium-weight fighter, is scheduled for production by 2030, with at least 120 units planned by 2040.
L&T’s Role in Tejas Production
L&T has been a key supplier in the Tejas program, providing critical components such as fuselage sections and wings. With its extensive experience in aerospace manufacturing, the company is now prepared to take on a larger role, potentially setting up an independent production line to accelerate deliveries. This move could significantly enhance the country’s ability to meet the IAF’s urgent requirements.
Challenges and Strategic Considerations
Despite the potential benefits, L&T’s plan faces certain challenges. Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) currently holds a monopoly on indigenous fighter jet production, and any new manufacturing setup would require significant investment, technology transfer agreements, and skilled labor development. Additionally, the pending Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) tender for 114 foreign jets could influence the IAF’s procurement strategy, impacting the scope for indigenous production.
