LPU Protests Turn Violent, 2,000 Police Deployed
Violent protests erupted at Lovely Professional University in Punjab’s Phagwara after students gathered over allegations that a female student had been sexually assaulted on campus. More than 2,000 police personnel were deployed as clashes, vandalism and a highway blockade disrupted the university and surrounding areas.

The unrest began late Saturday and continued into Sunday as students protested over an alleged sexual assault involving an unidentified outsider. Police said the allegation was still being verified, while the university described claims circulating on social media as unverified.
The protests later escalated, with vehicles and other property damaged or set on fire. Protesters also blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara stretch of National Highway 44, causing major traffic disruption.
Police resorted to a lathicharge after demonstrators refused to clear the highway, while stones were allegedly thrown at security personnel. Injuries were reported among both protesters and police.
2,000 Police Deployed at Lovely Professional University
Punjab Police deployed more than 2,000 personnel around the university to restore order and maintain security.
An FIR has been registered over the alleged sexual assault based on statements from students, while a Special Investigation Team has been announced to examine the allegations and establish the facts.
LPU Suspends Classes for 10 Days
Lovely Professional University has suspended regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed mid-term examinations until further notice.
Students have been permitted to return home after consulting their parents or guardians, while those remaining on campus have been advised to stay inside their hostels and avoid areas affected by the unrest.
