Kolkata Law Student Gang-Raped After Rejecting Proposal, Three Held

A deeply disturbing case has emerged from South Calcutta Law College, where a 24-year-old woman pursuing her legal studies was allegedly gang-raped by three men, including a former student leader, after she rejected a marriage proposal. The accused, Monojit Mishra, aged 31 and reportedly the general secretary of a prominent student organisation, is said to have forcibly taken the woman to the college campus and confined her inside the guardroom on Wednesday evening.

According to the victim’s detailed complaint, she had previously declined Mishra’s marriage proposal, citing her relationship with another person. Enraged, Mishra allegedly lured or coerced her into the college premises where, between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm, he and two current students—identified as Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20)—subjected her to sexual assault and psychological intimidation.

The survivor described being physically overpowered, locked inside the college guardroom, and forcibly undressed. Mishra reportedly initiated the assault while the others stood guard or watched. When she resisted, she was threatened with violence and blackmail. At one point, she said she pleaded for her life, collapsing due to respiratory distress. The accused are believed to have filmed parts of the assault to intimidate her into silence. She also claimed they threatened her with a hockey stick and let her go only later that night.

Following her complaint, all three accused were arrested and remanded to five days of police custody. Law enforcement has retrieved CCTV footage from the premises and seized mobile phones allegedly used in the crime. A medical examination of the survivor has been initiated, and a formal investigation is underway by the Kasba police.

The incident has sparked shock and outrage in the city, particularly among student communities and women’s rights groups. The fact that the assault took place within an educational institution has led to renewed questions about campus safety, administrative negligence, and the need for stricter monitoring of college premises. College authorities have remained tight-lipped, but sources indicate an internal inquiry is also being launched.

This assault has chilling echoes of previous high-profile cases that exposed glaring lapses in institutional oversight. Activists have demanded not just strict legal action against the accused but also comprehensive reforms in how college campuses are secured, especially after hours.

The survivor’s courage in reporting the incident underlines the urgent need for a zero-tolerance approach to gender-based violence, especially within academic spaces meant to be safe and empowering. Authorities have assured that the case will be pursued swiftly and with full sensitivity.
