Keisha Lance Bottoms Wins Georgia Governor Race
Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has won Georgia’s gubernatorial election, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. The former Atlanta mayor defeated Republican businessman Rick Jackson in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, ending nearly three decades without a Democratic victory in Georgia’s governor race. She will succeed Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who was ineligible to seek a third consecutive term.
Bottoms Defeats Republican Rick Jackson
Bottoms secured victory despite facing a substantial financial disadvantage against Jackson, a billionaire healthcare entrepreneur who reportedly spent more than $200 million of his personal wealth on the campaign.
Jackson campaigned on tax reductions, public safety and deregulation, while criticising Bottoms’ record as Atlanta mayor.
Bottoms focused on economic affordability, healthcare access and public services, presenting her campaign as an alternative to Republican leadership.
Georgia Elects First Black Woman Governor
Bottoms’ victory marks a historic milestone in American politics and makes her Georgia’s first female governor.
She previously served as Atlanta’s mayor from 2018 to 2022 and later held senior positions in former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Her campaign proposed expanding Medicaid, raising Georgia’s minimum wage to $15 per hour and increasing salaries for teachers, firefighters and police officers.
She also supported repealing the state’s restrictions on abortions after approximately six weeks of pregnancy.
Democrats End Decades of Republican Control
The result marks the first Democratic gubernatorial victory in Georgia since 1998, reflecting the state’s increasingly competitive political landscape.
Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff also secured re-election, strengthening the party’s position in Georgia.
However, Bottoms could face legislative challenges because Republicans have maintained substantial influence in the state’s General Assembly.
Her victory follows earlier gubernatorial campaigns by Democrat Stacey Abrams, whose efforts contributed to increased voter participation and Democratic organisation across Georgia.
