JD Vance Backs Economic Pressure on Iran
US Vice President JD Vance has said economic pressure is now Washington’s most effective tool against Iran, signalling a shift in the Trump administration’s strategy as the confrontation increasingly moves from direct military pressure towards sanctions, trade restrictions and financial isolation.
JD Vance Backs Economic Pressure on Iran
Vance said the United States had entered a new phase in its confrontation with Tehran and argued that economic measures offered Washington greater leverage.
He acknowledged that Iran retains the ability to impose costs on the US and its allies, particularly through disruptions affecting global energy markets. However, Vance maintained that Tehran has faced significantly heavier economic pressure and said Washington intends to keep tightening that squeeze.
JD Vance Highlights Iran’s Hormuz Leverage
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the strategy because it is one of the world’s most important energy transit routes. Iran’s ability to disrupt shipping through the waterway gives Tehran substantial economic leverage during the conflict.
Vance said maintaining energy flows through Hormuz while increasing pressure on Iran would remain an important US objective. Disruptions to shipping have already heightened concerns over oil supplies and global energy prices.
Trump Administration Plans Tougher Iran Sanctions
The Trump administration is preparing further measures aimed at restricting Iran’s access to international trade, finance and oil revenues.
US officials have also urged other countries and financial institutions to avoid helping Tehran circumvent sanctions. Iran, meanwhile, has rejected Washington’s pressure campaign and maintains that additional economic restrictions will not force a change in its policies.
The latest remarks from Vance underline Washington’s growing reliance on economic tools as it seeks to weaken Iran’s ability to sustain the confrontation while limiting broader economic fallout for the United States.
