Japan Backs India Post-Pahalgam Attack
In the aftermath of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which left 26 civilians dead, Japan has extended full diplomatic and strategic support to India. During a bilateral meeting held in New Delhi on May 5, Japanese Defence Minister General Nakatani expressed strong solidarity with India and emphasized the importance of international unity in combating terrorism.
Japan Condemns Pahalgam Attack
General Nakatani condemned the attack in unequivocal terms, stating that terrorism cannot be justified under any circumstances. He reiterated Japan’s position against terrorism in all its forms and offered support to India in strengthening its counter-terrorism capabilities. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh acknowledged the gesture and highlighted the need for a firm, coordinated global response to state-sponsored terror networks.
Strengthening Defence Cooperation
The meeting served not only as a platform for expressing solidarity but also for advancing bilateral defence cooperation. Both nations agreed to deepen their Special Strategic and Global Partnership. Areas identified for enhanced collaboration include tank and aero engine development, automation technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and space security.
The two ministers also reviewed the progress of existing defence and maritime cooperation mechanisms. They explored possibilities for expanding joint military drills and ensuring closer coordination in maintaining peace and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
Shared Commitment to Regional Security
Amid growing regional threats, the discussions underscored a mutual commitment to strengthening a rules-based international order. India and Japan emphasized the need to act collectively against cross-border terrorism and to ensure that such acts do not go unpunished or unaddressed by the international community.
The meeting marks a key milestone in India-Japan ties, reinforcing their strategic alignment on both security and diplomatic fronts. As both nations navigate shared geopolitical challenges, their united stance following the Pahalgam attack sets a strong precedent for collaborative action against terror.
