Jammu Shiv Market Fire Destroys Nearly 40 Shops
The fire broke out around 10.30 pm on Sunday and quickly spread through the commercial market, which houses shops selling dry fruits, blankets, shawls, clothing and food supplies.
Firefighters faced difficulties accessing the affected establishments because of narrow approach roads. Emergency personnel eventually approached the flames from the rear of the market to prevent further damage.
The blaze was brought under control around 3.15 am on Monday, leaving much of the four-decade-old marketplace in ruins.
Short Circuit Suspected in Jammu Railway Station Fire
BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa said preliminary information suggested that an electrical short circuit in one shop triggered the fire.
Strong winds reportedly accelerated its spread to neighbouring establishments. However, authorities have not conclusively established the cause.
Police officers and emergency personnel remained at the location to coordinate firefighting and relief operations.
Jammu Traders Seek Compensation After Market Fire
Affected shopkeepers described substantial financial losses, with several businesses losing their entire stock and equipment.
One trader estimated that at least 25 to 30 establishments had suffered complete losses and urged the administration to provide immediate financial assistance.
Randhawa said compensation concerns would be discussed with the administration after officials assessed the damage.
Authorities are continuing to evaluate property losses and investigate the circumstances surrounding the fire.
