Jammu and Kashmir Polls: Voting Underway for Final Phase
The third and final phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections commenced at 7 am on Tuesday, with voters across 40 constituencies heading to the polls. This phase covers 40 out of the total 90 seats in the Union territory.
Historic Elections After Article 370 Abrogation
These Assembly elections are the first to be held in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370, which previously granted special status to the erstwhile state. The elections are being closely watched as they signify a significant political shift and an opportunity for the people of Jammu and Kashmir to choose their representatives in the newly formed Union territory.
Seven Districts and 415 Candidates in Fray
A total of 415 candidates are vying for seats in this phase, representing seven districts: Jammu, Udhampur, Samba, and Kathua in the Jammu region, and Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara in north Kashmir.
Prominent political figures are contesting in this phase, including People’s Conference chairperson and former minister Sajjad Lone, who is standing for elections from two seats in Kupwara. Two former deputy chief ministers, Tara Chand from the Congress and Muzaffar Baig from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), are contesting from Chhamb and Baramulla, respectively.
Key Contenders and Notable Seats
Among other notable candidates are National Panthers Party India chief Dev Singh, who is contesting from Chenani, and several former ministers such as Raman Bhalla from RS Pura, Usman Majid from Bandipora, Nazir Ahmad Khan from Gurez, Taj Mohiuddin from Uri, and Basharat Bukhari from Wagoora-Kreeri.
Over 39 Lakh Voters to Decide Candidates’ Fate
With more than 39.18 lakh eligible voters, the third phase of polling is taking place across 5,060 polling stations set up in the seven districts. This phase is critical for determining the political landscape of the region and the future of governance in Jammu and Kashmir.
High Voter Turnout in Previous Phases
The first phase of polling, which took place for 24 seats, recorded an impressive voter turnout of 61%, while the second phase saw 57.31% turnout, reflecting strong participation from the electorate.
Leaders Encourage Voter Participation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the people of Jammu and Kashmir to participate in large numbers and make this phase a celebration of democracy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also appealed to voters, encouraging them to choose a government that stands firm against terrorism, separatism, and corruption.
