Jaishankar Criticizes Canada for Targeting Indian Diplomats Amid Diplomatic Row
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar strongly criticized Canada for its recent targeting of Indian diplomats, stating that India outrightly rejects the actions taken by the Canadian government.
Speaking at an event in Pune, Jaishankar responded to the escalating tensions between the two nations over Ottawa’s accusations linking New Delhi to the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India’s Concerns Ignored by Canada
Jaishankar emphasized that India had previously raised concerns about organized crime in Canada, but these concerns were overlooked. He stressed the importance of national integrity and sovereignty, urging Canada to adopt a “more sensible, more sober, and more responsible” approach in handling the issue. “We completely reject the manner in which the Canadian government targeted our High Commissioner and diplomats,” Jaishankar added.
Diplomatic Retaliation and Escalation
The diplomatic row intensified last week when Canadian authorities named India’s High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, and other diplomats as ‘persons of interest’ in the Nijjar case. In response, India recalled Verma and five other diplomats and expelled six Canadian diplomats from New Delhi. Jaishankar dismissed any potential sanctions from Ottawa as baseless and damaging.
Political Atmosphere in Canada
Addressing the political climate, Jaishankar noted that a “small minority” in Canada had gained significant political influence, which has negatively impacted the bilateral relationship. He cautioned that the situation is harmful not only for India but also for Canada’s own political environment.
Jaishankar also highlighted India’s growing global diplomatic influence, referencing its role in mediating during the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
