Jairam Ramesh Slams PM Modi for Using Delegations as Diversion
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to send an all-party parliamentary delegation abroad, alleging it is a deliberate attempt to divert public attention from the Pahalgam terror attack. According to Ramesh, the timing of these international trips is suspect and appears designed to shift the national conversation away from the government’s failure to prevent the April 22 massacre in Jammu & Kashmir.
Ramesh described the move as “a political gimmick” intended to suppress scrutiny and avoid facing tough questions regarding the internal security environment under the Modi-led administration.
Congress Demands Accountability After Pahalgam Attack
The Congress party has taken an aggressive stance following the Pahalgam incident, which resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians and exposed alleged lapses in intelligence and counter-terror preparedness. Ramesh reiterated the party’s demand for a special session of Parliament to address the security failure in detail.
He also called upon Home Minister Amit Shah to explain how such a large-scale attack could occur in a region with heavy military presence. “Sending MPs overseas while the nation mourns is not leadership — it’s escapism,” he remarked.
Foreign Delegations Amid Domestic Crisis Draw Flak
The timing of the parliamentary delegation’s visit to Japan, part of a broader diplomatic outreach program, has drawn intense political backlash. Ramesh and several opposition leaders argue that these trips serve little purpose when domestic security issues remain unresolved.
The BJP, however, has defended the initiative, stating that foreign visits are critical for strengthening international partnerships and enhancing India’s global presence. Still, Ramesh questioned the optics of prioritizing diplomacy while avoiding accountability at home.
Wider Political Implications
This confrontation reflects growing tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition over national security and governance. Ramesh’s remarks are part of a broader campaign by the Congress to challenge the Modi government’s handling of internal threats and its perceived use of distractions to deflect criticism.
As Parliament reconvenes in the coming weeks, the opposition is expected to increase pressure on the government, with the Pahalgam attack becoming a focal point for demands of transparency and responsibility.
