J.P. Nadda, Jitendra Singh Meet Sonam Wangchuk
Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Minister of State Jitendra Singh met climate activist Sonam Wangchuk at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram after his transfer from Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital.
Union Ministers Meet Sonam Wangchuk
The ministers visited Wangchuk on Tuesday night to enquire about his health as his indefinite hunger strike continued for more than three weeks. No official statement detailing their conversation or announcing any agreement was immediately released.
Wangchuk was admitted to the intensive care unit under the supervision of an internal medicine specialist. He was brought to the hospital by ambulance at around 7.30 p.m. amid tight security.
The activist has continued his fast while receiving medical monitoring. His protest supports demands for accountability over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and broader reforms in the education system.
Wangchuk Shifted to Medanta Hospital
Wangchuk was transferred to Medanta after the Delhi High Court directed authorities to move him from Safdarjung Hospital to a medical facility preferred by his family.
The order followed a petition filed by his wife, Gitanjali Angmo, seeking his transfer to the private hospital. The government raised no objection to the request, and the court ordered that the move be completed immediately.
Wangchuk had earlier been taken from the Jantar Mantar protest site and admitted to Safdarjung Hospital after concerns were raised about his condition during the prolonged fast.
Sonam Wangchuk Hunger Strike Continues
Wangchuk joined the CJP-led agitation at Jantar Mantar on June 28. He has indicated that he would consider ending his hunger strike if political leaders commit to raising education-sector accountability in Parliament.
A delegation of Opposition MPs is also expected to meet him and urge him to discontinue the fast. The CJP has issued a similar appeal, saying it will continue the campaign while asking Wangchuk to prioritise his health.
