Iran Rejects Trump’s Claim Over Strait of Hormuz
Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that Washington could soon declare the Strait of Hormuz American territory, insisting that the strategic waterway remains under Iranian control. Tehran said the strait could not be seized through political declarations, military deployments or presidential orders.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the Strait of Hormuz “has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian”.
Responding to Trump’s remarks, he said the waterway could not be seized “by tweet” or by deploying aircraft carriers.
Gharibabadi maintained that Iran alone would decide when the strait was opened or closed and said Tehran would continue enforcing restrictions until Washington accepted what Iran described as its strategic defeat.
Trump Says US Could Claim Hormuz
Trump had said during an event in New York that after the United States finished defeating Iran, he would “pretty soon” declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory.
He had earlier claimed that Washington exercised “total control” over the waterway through its naval blockade.
However, a White House official subsequently indicated that Trump’s comment about formally declaring the strait American territory was intended as a joke rather than an announced change in US policy.
Hormuz Remains Centre of US-Iran Conflict
The Strait of Hormuz has become a central point of confrontation during the continuing US-Iran conflict.
Iran maintains that commercial shipping cannot pass safely without its approval, while Washington argues that international navigation through the strait must remain protected.
The narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman is one of the world’s most important energy routes, making continued disruption a major risk for global oil markets.
