Indian Pilot Foils flydubai Crash Attempt

An Indian pilot has been widely praised after surviving a stabbing and helping prevent a suspected attempt to crash a flydubai flight travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, with passengers and off-duty pilots intervening during the mid-air emergency.

Indian Captain Stabbed on flydubai Flight

Flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv on September 30 when a violent confrontation broke out inside the cockpit.

Israeli officials said the Omani co-pilot allegedly stabbed Indian captain Smit Machchhar and attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. The Boeing 737 then plunged by roughly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds while flying over Jordan.

The aircraft transmitted emergency codes associated with both a general emergency and unlawful interference, prompting concerns of a possible hijacking.

Passengers Help Subdue Alleged Attacker

Despite suffering stab wounds, Machchhar managed to unlock the cockpit door. Israeli passenger Yaniv Hayun and others entered the cockpit and helped overpower the co-pilot.

Off-duty pilots travelling aboard the flight then assisted in regaining control of the aircraft.

The flight was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely. All passengers survived, while the injured pilots received medical treatment.

Netanyahu Praises Captain Smit Machchhar

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Machchhar and the passengers who intervened, describing their actions as having prevented a potentially catastrophic incident.

The alleged attacker was taken into custody by Saudi authorities.

Investigators are examining the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident. Flydubai has cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed, while authorities have not yet publicly established whether the alleged attack was terrorism-related.
