Indian Army Eyes March Deadline for ATAGS Deal
The Indian Army is expected to finalize a landmark deal for 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) by March 2025. This procurement is a significant step in bolstering India’s indigenous defense manufacturing and enhancing the Army’s artillery capabilities.
Indigenous Artillery to Strengthen Capabilities
The ATAGS, developed under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, is a 155 mm/52 caliber gun system jointly produced by Bharat Forge and Tata Advanced Systems Limited. Designed to meet modern battlefield requirements, these guns offer superior range, accuracy, and operational mobility.
General Manoj Pande, the Chief of Army Staff, stated, “This procurement will mark a milestone in our efforts to enhance self-reliance in defense production and modernize our artillery systems.” The ATAGS guns are capable of firing long-range precision ammunition, a feature critical for countering emerging threats.
A Boost for Indigenous Manufacturing
The acquisition aligns with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aimed at reducing reliance on foreign defense imports. By leveraging domestic manufacturing capabilities, the deal is expected to provide a significant boost to the local defense sector.
Defense experts have lauded the move, highlighting that the ATAGS guns are among the most advanced in their category globally. Their introduction into the Indian Army is anticipated to significantly improve operational effectiveness in high-altitude and rugged terrain, such as in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh.
Timeline and Expectations
The procurement process is in its final stages, with all necessary trials and evaluations completed. The formal agreement, expected by March 2025, will be followed by phased deliveries of the artillery systems.
This deal underscores India’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities through indigenous solutions. By integrating the ATAGS into its arsenal, the Indian Army is poised to enhance its strategic readiness and operational edge.
