India Vows to Protect Trade Amid US Sanctions Bill
India has said it will take all necessary steps to protect its trade and economic interests after the US Congress passed legislation giving President Donald Trump authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major purchasers of Russian energy. New Delhi also stressed that securing affordable energy for its population remains a key priority.
India Responds to US Russia Sanctions Bill
The Ministry of External Affairs said India had taken note of the passage of the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026 and was closely monitoring developments.
New Delhi said its energy purchases would continue to be guided by market conditions, affordability and national requirements. India has also raised concerns with Washington about the potential impact of secondary tariffs on bilateral trade and global energy markets.
US Bill Allows Tariffs of Up to 100%
The US House of Representatives approved the legislation after it had earlier cleared the Senate.
The bill authorises the US President to impose tariffs of up to 100% on goods from major purchasers of Russian oil and gas, potentially affecting countries such as India and China.
However, the tariffs are not automatic. The legislation gives the President discretion over whether duties are imposed and the rate applied.
India Vows to Protect Trade Interests
India said it would continue engaging with US authorities while working with domestic industry to assess the possible consequences of the legislation.
New Delhi has repeatedly maintained that energy security must remain central to its economic policy, particularly given India’s large and growing energy requirements.
The eventual impact on Indian exports will depend on whether Trump signs the legislation and subsequently exercises the tariff powers provided under it.
