India-US Trade Deal Near Completion: Sergio Gor

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has expressed confidence that New Delhi and Washington will finalise their long-pending bilateral trade agreement, describing negotiations as being close to completion. Speaking in Atlanta on October 31, 2026, Gor also indicated that both countries were preparing significant announcements ahead of the upcoming G20 Summit, highlighting expanding cooperation in trade, energy, defence and technology.

Sergio Gor Optimistic About India-US Trade Deal

Gor said the proposed agreement had remained close to completion for some time and expressed determination to conclude the negotiations.

He noted that discussions had continued for slightly over a year, contrasting the timeline with India’s trade negotiations with the European Union, which took nearly two decades.

The ambassador maintained that complex agreements between major economies required time, while emphasising that both governments remained committed to reaching a settlement.

However, no final signing date has been announced.

India and US Prepare Major G20 Announcements

Gor said recent diplomatic engagements had focused heavily on commercial diplomacy and energy cooperation.

He highlighted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visits to India and indicated that officials were working towards substantial bilateral outcomes ahead of the G20 Summit.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also held discussions with Rubio during the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta.

The proposed announcements could cover several areas of bilateral cooperation, although specific commitments have not been disclosed.

Quad Foreign Ministers Hold Third Meeting in Six Months

Jaishankar joined his counterparts from the United States, Japan and Australia for the third Quad ministerial meeting within six months.

The discussions focused on joint initiatives, regional cooperation and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.

Gor said the four countries were coordinating regularly and hoped their engagement would lead to a summit involving all four national leaders.

He also highlighted expanding India-US defence cooperation, citing joint military exercises and growing engagement between their armed forces.
