India to Procure 114 Fighter Jets to Strengthen IAF Fleet
India is set to initiate the procurement of 114 multirole fighter aircraft (MRFA) to bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat capabilities. This move comes as the IAF faces a shortfall in squadron strength, necessitating urgent reinforcements to maintain operational readiness.
IAF’s Need for Fighter Jets
The IAF currently operates with 31 fighter squadrons, falling short of the required 42 squadrons needed to counter regional threats effectively. The retirement of aging aircraft, such as the MiG-21, has further reduced combat strength, making the acquisition of modern fighter jets a strategic necessity. The new aircraft will complement existing fleets and upcoming indigenous platforms like the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
Procurement Model and Industry Collaboration
The procurement is expected to follow a ‘C-295 model,’ where a foreign aircraft manufacturer will collaborate with an Indian partner to produce the jets locally. This approach aims to strengthen domestic defense manufacturing while ensuring the timely induction of aircraft. Several global aerospace giants, including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Dassault Aviation, and Saab, are expected to compete for the contract.
Lockheed Martin is offering the F-21, an advanced version of its F-16, while Boeing has pitched the F/A-18 Super Hornet. Dassault Aviation may propose additional Rafale jets, which have already been inducted into the IAF, while Saab’s Gripen E/F and Russia’s Su-35 are also in contention.
Strategic Importance and Challenges
The acquisition of these fighter jets is crucial for India’s defense preparedness, given the evolving security landscape in the region. The IAF requires advanced aircraft equipped with cutting-edge technology to maintain superiority. However, challenges such as budgetary constraints, technology transfer agreements, and logistical considerations could influence the timeline and execution of the procurement process.
The launch of the MRFA program marks a decisive step in modernizing India’s air force capabilities. Strengthening the IAF’s combat fleet through this initiative will enhance national security while fostering advancements in the domestic defense sector.
