India Tells Starlink to Follow Telecom Rules
The Indian government has made it clear that Elon Musk’s Starlink must comply with domestic telecommunications regulations before launching commercial satellite internet services in the country. A senior government official said on October 14, 2026, that Starlink had not yet agreed to certain infrastructure requirements, delaying its final operational clearance despite having secured an initial licence.
India Demands Regulatory Compliance From Starlink
Government officials said Starlink must establish local base stations and address outstanding security concerns before receiving permission to begin operations.
The infrastructure requirement is intended to ensure that satellite communication providers remain subject to Indian regulatory oversight and security obligations.
Officials clarified that the government had no objection to Starlink entering the Indian market, provided the company fulfilled the applicable conditions.
Starlink Faces Competition From Jio and OneWeb
Starlink is among three major companies seeking to launch commercial satellite broadband services in India, alongside Reliance Jio’s satellite communications venture and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb.
Bharti Enterprises Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal said OneWeb deserved earlier regulatory clearance because it had applied nearly five years ago.
Mittal stated that OneWeb’s ground infrastructure had been ready for approximately three years, while its satellites had been positioned to serve India for five years.
He expressed hope that OneWeb would receive approval before Starlink.
Government Rejects Musk’s Monopoly Allegations
The regulatory developments follow Musk’s allegations that influential Indian business interests were obstructing Starlink’s entry to protect established telecommunications companies.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia rejected the allegations, maintaining that India does not permit monopolies and that satellite operators must meet the same regulatory requirements.
The government has confirmed that security assessments and satellite spectrum allocation remain necessary before commercial operations can begin.
Starlink’s launch timeline therefore remains uncertain, with final approval dependent on compliance with India’s telecommunications and national security requirements.
