India Summons Bangladesh Diplomat Over Border Fencing Dispute

India has summoned Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner, Nural Islam, to discuss escalating tensions over border fencing activities in Malda’s Baishnabnagar region. This diplomatic move follows recent objections from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) regarding the installation of single-row barbed wire fencing by the Border Security Force (BSF) at Sukdevpur, amid growing concerns over infiltration.

The situation intensified when BGB personnel opposed the fencing, leading to a temporary halt in construction. Although work briefly resumed, it was suspended again following a flag meeting between the two border forces. BSF officials have stated that while the fencing work is not urgent, it has been temporarily suspended to avoid unnecessary tension and conflict, with plans to resume soon without setting a specific deadline.

In a related development, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, met with Bangladeshi authorities to discuss a cooperative approach to combating crime in border areas. Verma emphasized the importance of mutual understanding and regular communication between BSF and BGB to ensure security along the border.

Bangladesh’s Home Affairs Adviser, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, attributed the ongoing border tensions to “unequal agreements” made during previous governments’ tenures, suggesting that these deals have led to complications along the India-Bangladesh border.

The border between India and Bangladesh has historically been sensitive, with issues such as illegal crossings, smuggling, and security concerns prompting both nations to seek effective border management solutions. Approximately 50% of the 2,216 km border in West Bengal remains unfenced, making it vulnerable to illicit cross-border activities.

Both countries have previously engaged in diplomatic dialogues and joint initiatives to address these challenges. The current situation underscores the need for continued collaboration and open communication to maintain peace and stability along the shared border.

As the situation develops, both nations are expected to engage in further discussions to resolve the fencing dispute amicably, ensuring that security concerns are addressed without escalating tensions.
