India Rejects Nepal Lipulekh Objection
India has rejected Nepal’s objection to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route through Lipulekh Pass, saying the pilgrimage route is not a new development and has been used for decades.
India Rejects Nepal Objection On Lipulekh
The Ministry of External Affairs said India’s position on Nepal’s territorial claims remains clear and consistent. It said such claims are not justified or based on historical facts and evidence.
The response came after Nepal sent diplomatic notes to India and China objecting to the use of Lipulekh Pass for the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Via Lipulekh
India said Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand has been a long-standing route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra since 1954. The MEA said the use of this route for the pilgrimage is therefore not a new development.
The yatra is scheduled to take place from June to August. Pilgrims will travel through the Lipulekh route in Uttarakhand and the Nathu La route in Sikkim.
India-Nepal Border Dispute
Nepal has claimed that Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura fall within its territory under the 1816 Sugauli Treaty. India has rejected these claims and said unilateral expansion of territorial claims is untenable.
The MEA also said India remains open to constructive engagement with Nepal, including dialogue on agreed outstanding boundary issues through diplomacy.
