India-New Zealand FTA Takes Effect, Tariffs Cut
The India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) came into effect on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, granting Indian exporters duty-free access to the entire New Zealand market. The agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral trade, create opportunities for Indian businesses and professionals, and facilitate investments worth $20 billion over the coming years.
India-New Zealand FTA Opens Duty-Free Export Market
The agreement eliminates import duties on 100% of Indian goods entering New Zealand, benefiting sectors including textiles, leather, footwear, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewellery.
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the opportunities for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), artisans, farmers and women entrepreneurs.
India also flagged off its first JCB machine export to New Zealand on October 19, marking an early commercial development associated with the agreement.
India Protects Dairy and Sensitive Agricultural Sectors
While New Zealand receives preferential tariff treatment on selected exports, India has excluded sensitive products, including dairy, sugar, edible oils and certain agricultural commodities, from tariff concessions.
The agreement also establishes an Agricultural Productivity Partnership to improve farming practices through technology transfers, training and cooperation.
Dedicated initiatives covering kiwifruit, apples and honey are expected to support agricultural collaboration between the two countries.
India-New Zealand Trade Deal Targets Higher Investment
The FTA aims to expand bilateral trade, with both countries targeting approximately NZ$7 billion in trade by 2030.
New Zealand has committed to facilitating $20 billion in investment into India over 15 years, supporting deeper economic cooperation.
The agreement also provides improved opportunities for Indian professionals and students, including provisions for professional mobility, working holidays and post-study employment.
Signed in New Delhi on April 27, 2026, the agreement represents an important step in India’s efforts to diversify export markets and strengthen economic partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region.
