India Honored with Global Road Safety Award

In a significant achievement, the Indian government has been awarded the prestigious Prince Michael Decade of Action Road Safety Award for its substantial progress in enhancing vehicle safety over the past decade. The accolade was presented during the 4th Ministerial Conference on Road Safety held in Marrakech, Morocco, where global leaders convened to strategize on reducing road fatalities by 50% by 2030.

Advancements in Vehicle Safety Standards

India’s commitment to improving vehicle safety is evident through the implementation of a new car safety assessment program and the mandatory inclusion of Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) in all new two-wheelers. These measures aim to elevate vehicle safety standards to be on par with international benchmarks.

Recognition at the 4th Ministerial Conference on Road Safety

The award was received by Ajay Tamta, Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, from Etienne Krug of the World Health Organization. The citation highlighted India’s proactive steps following the first independent crash test ratings of Indian cars in 2014, leading to the establishment of a comprehensive framework for vehicle safety standards.

Ongoing Challenges in Road Safety

Despite these advancements, India continues to face challenges in reducing road fatalities, particularly among vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists. In 2023, the country reported a staggering 173,000 road-related deaths, underscoring the need for continued efforts in road safety initiatives.

Global Commitment to Reducing Road Fatalities

The conference in Marrakech served as a platform for countries to share strategies and commit to actionable plans aimed at enhancing road safety. The collective goal is to halve the number of road-related deaths globally by 2030, a target that requires sustained political will, robust policy implementation, and active public engagement.

India’s recognition with the Prince Michael Decade of Action Road Safety Award not only acknowledges the strides made in vehicle safety but also serves as a catalyst for further reforms and initiatives to ensure safer roads for all users.
