India Denies Trump’s Phone Promise Claim
New Delhi on Thursday rejected US President Donald Trump’s assertion that he had spoken by phone with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which Modi promised India would halt Russian oil imports. The External Affairs Ministry stated no such call took place.
Trump’s original assertions
Trump had claimed Modi assured him the halt would be a “big step,” but said the change would take time. He made these remarks amid U.S. pressure on India over its Russian crude purchases.
India’s energy policy unchanged
India reaffirmed that its policies on oil imports are driven by consumer interests, energy security, and diversification. Officials pointed out that any adjustment in sourcing must consider supply stability and market dynamics.
Market reactions and supply realities
Russian crude currently makes up about 35–40 % of India’s oil imports. Analysts note India cannot instantaneously shift away from Russian supply without risking price shocks and supply disruption.
