India and US Near $4 Billion Deal For Six More P-8I

The Indian Navy is on the verge of finalising a deal of approximately US $4 billion for the acquisition of six additional P‑8I Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft from the United States Department of Defense (DoD) via Boeing. This would raise the Indian Navy’s P-8I fleet from 12 to 18 aircraft.

Strategic Importance

The P-8I is a long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft capable of enhancing surveillance across the Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region. With rising Chinese submarine and surface vessel activity in key sea lanes, this deal signals India’s intent to strengthen maritime domain awareness and deterrence.

Status & Timeline

Negotiations between the two nations are in advanced stages, with a US delegation reportedly arriving in New Delhi to finalise key commercial and technical terms. Though the $4 billion figure is widely quoted, final contract signing has yet to occur and cost may still vary. The Indian MoD has not publicly announced conclusion of the deal yet.
