IMF Raises India Growth Forecast to 7%

India is projected to remain the world’s fastest-growing major economy, with the International Monetary Fund raising its growth forecast to 7% for both 2026-27 and 2027-28 despite higher oil prices and global geopolitical uncertainty.

IMF Raises India Growth Forecast to 7%

The IMF upgraded India’s GDP growth projection for 2026-27 to 7%, up sharply from its July estimate of 6.4%.

Growth for 2027-28 has also been raised to 7% from the earlier 6.7% forecast.

The upgrade reflects stronger-than-expected economic momentum supported by resilient domestic demand, robust services activity and continued structural reforms.

India Outpaces Global Growth

India’s projected expansion remains significantly higher than the broader global economy.

World growth is expected at 3.1% in 2026 and 3.4% in 2027, while advanced economies are forecast to expand at around 1.8% in 2027.

India’s large domestic market, favourable demographics and strong services sector are expected to continue supporting growth even as external risks remain elevated.

Higher Oil Prices Remain a Key Risk

The stronger outlook comes despite the economic impact of the US-Iran conflict and the continuing Russia-Ukraine war.

The average global crude oil price is projected at around $95.74 per barrel in 2026, about 41% higher than in 2025, before declining to approximately $87.39 in 2027.

Higher energy costs remain an important challenge for India because of its dependence on imported crude.

The latest IMF forecast follows the Reserve Bank of India’s recent decision to raise its own growth estimate for the current financial year to 7.1%.
