Heavy Rain in Mumbai Leaves Commuters Stranded, Flights Diverted as Weather Worsens
Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall this evening, leading to flooding on many roads and causing severe traffic disruptions across the city. Several flights were also diverted due to the adverse weather conditions.
SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara announced on X (formerly Twitter) that some of their flights had been diverted.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for Mumbai and neighboring districts, forecasting “extremely heavy rainfall” until Thursday morning. Several suburbs in Mumbai, especially Mulund, saw significant rainfall, causing flooding in low-lying areas.
The IMD’s 5:30 PM forecast indicated “extremely heavy rainfall and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds” across isolated parts of Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts.
IMD scientist Sushma Nair explained that a weather trough from north Konkan to south Bangladesh, combined with cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh, is leading to widespread moderate rainfall across the Konkan region, including Mumbai and Goa.
