Govt Imposes Strict Conditions on Starlink’s India Entry
The Indian government has laid down stringent conditions for the entry of Elon Musk’s Starlink into the country’s satellite internet sector. The conditions, which focus on security, regulatory compliance, and ownership restrictions, are aimed at ensuring that foreign satellite communication companies adhere to Indian laws before beginning operations.
Govt Mandates Security Clearance for Starlink
The government has made it clear that Starlink must meet strict security requirements before being allowed to operate in India. It has been specified that any foreign satellite internet provider must ensure that its operations align with national security interests. This includes obligations to store data locally, comply with regulatory frameworks, and be subject to strict monitoring to prevent any misuse of communication networks.
A key requirement is that Starlink must establish a local entity in India and ensure a majority Indian ownership in its operations. This move is in line with the government’s broader push to regulate foreign direct investment in critical infrastructure sectors, particularly in areas involving sensitive communication technology.
Licensing and Compliance Hurdles
