Maxwell Misses Farewell Match at Melbourne Cricket Ground
Maxwell revealed that he had hoped to play a final international match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against England later this month.
However, Australia’s selectors opted to introduce younger players as the team prepares for future tournaments, including the 2028 Olympics.
Speaking on The Final Word podcast, Maxwell said he understood the selectors’ decision and had not faced pressure to retire.
He also acknowledged becoming emotional while informing his Victoria teammates about his retirement.
Three-Time World Cup Winner to Continue Franchise Cricket
Maxwell played an important role in Australia’s victorious 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup campaigns and the 2021 T20 World Cup triumph.
His unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan during the 2023 World Cup remains among his most memorable performances.
Although his international career has ended, Maxwell will continue playing franchise T20 cricket, including for Melbourne Stars in the upcoming Big Bash League.
