Gig Workers Protest in Gurugram, Delay Deliveries

Gig economy workers protested across Gurugram on Thursday, 25 December 2025, leading to delays in food and delivery services for many customers. Workers associated with major delivery platforms gathered at several points in the city and temporarily logged off from their apps to press for better pay and working conditions. The action was part of a nationwide strike by delivery and gig workers held on Christmas Day and planned again for New Year’s Eve.

The protests were organised by unions representing delivery partners from several e-commerce and food delivery platforms. Workers said they face low earnings, long hours, unsafe work conditions, and lack of social security, and they demanded transparent wage structures, safety reforms and respect at work. During the protest, groups of delivery riders assembled at key locations in Gurugram, including markets and busy intersections, which reduced the number of riders available for orders and caused service delays.

Impact on Services and Reactions

Residents in multiple sectors reported that food deliveries took much longer than usual, with some orders delayed by several hours. Several restaurants also experienced operational strain as platform riders stopped work temporarily and in some cases restaurants had to deploy their own staff to complete deliveries.

While the protest disrupted services in Gurugram, similar nationwide strike actions affected delivery platforms in other major Indian cities, contributing to delays and customer inconvenience during a peak festive period. Workers’ unions called on the government and industry to address wage concerns, withdraw ultra-fast delivery models they say endanger workers, and extend social security and formal recognition to gig economy labour.
