Gadkari Launches ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass for Private Vehicles

In a move aimed at streamlining highway travel and reducing toll-related delays, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced the launch of a FASTag-based Annual Pass for non-commercial private vehicles. The announcement was made via a post on X (formerly Twitter), where the minister detailed the scope and benefits of the new system.

Set to be rolled out from August 15, the pass will cost ₹3,000 and will be valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips on National Highways—whichever comes earlier. The initiative specifically targets private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans, excluding commercial and heavy transport vehicles.

FASTag Annual Pass

The scheme is designed to simplify toll payments, reduce congestion at plazas, and encourage more frequent use of highways without the hassle of per-trip transactions. With 200 trips effectively prepaid, it benefits frequent travellers such as commuters, long-distance drivers, and families making repeated trips over the year.

The pass also aligns with the government’s broader push toward digital toll collection, building on the success of the FASTag system, which has already seen significant adoption nationwide. With over 7 crore FASTags already issued and toll collection going fully digital at most plazas, the annual pass is expected to further incentivize digital toll payment systems.

Road Ministry’s Broader Vision

This move fits within a larger vision to make Indian highways more user-friendly, efficient, and less cash-dependent. Gadkari has previously expressed his commitment to developing a toll system that combines cost predictability for users with ease of travel, thereby reducing idling time and fuel wastage at toll plazas.

Additionally, the ministry is exploring options for GPS-based tolling, which could further refine the pay-per-use model on a per-kilometre basis. However, until such systems are ready for nationwide deployment, the annual FASTag pass provides a bridge solution that meets both convenience and affordability.

With the annual pass set to become operational on Independence Day, users are expected to get more clarity in the coming weeks on the exact process for activation, participating toll plazas, and trip tracking mechanisms.

The announcement is being widely seen as a commuter-friendly step and a boost to the digital mobility infrastructure of India.
