Flavio Bolsonaro Claims Persecution After Fleeing Brazil
Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro has claimed that political and judicial persecution forced him to leave Brazil following his defeat in the presidential election. Speaking during an Instagram livestream on Friday, October 30, 2026, Bolsonaro accused Brazilian authorities of targeting him through criminal investigations and passport restrictions. The 45-year-old politician arrived in Florida on October 28 after travelling through Argentina and Ecuador.
Flavio Bolsonaro Claims Political Persecution in Brazil
Bolsonaro said he decided to leave after learning that authorities had cancelled his Brazilian passports as part of a money-laundering investigation.
He alleged that Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes had made false accusations against him and described the legal proceedings as politically motivated.
Recalling a conversation with his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, he said the family had anticipated further action against him.
Bolsonaro maintained that his departure was intended to protect his family and enable him to continue political activities from abroad. His allegations of persecution have not been independently established.
Lula Defeats Bolsonaro in Brazil Presidential Election
Bolsonaro lost the October 25 presidential runoff to incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who secured approximately 51.8% of valid votes.
The defeated candidate has questioned the election’s legitimacy and suggested voting irregularities without presenting substantiated evidence.
Brazilian electoral authorities have recognised Lula’s victory, while Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat.
He also indicated that he could contest another presidential election before the next scheduled vote in 2030.
Trump and Milei Face Questions Over Bolsonaro’s Departure
Bolsonaro’s arrival in the United States has prompted questions about possible assistance from President Donald Trump’s administration and Argentine President Javier Milei.
Trump acknowledged allowing Bolsonaro to enter the United States but declined to endorse his claim to be Brazil’s rightful leader.
Lula criticised Bolsonaro’s departure, questioning why he had left while facing legal scrutiny.
The developments have added further tension to relations between Brazil and the United States.
