Flavio Bolsonaro Claims Brazil Presidency From US

Brazilian senator Flávio Bolsonaro has declared himself the country’s rightful leader despite losing the October 25 presidential election to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Speaking from Miami on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, Bolsonaro alleged electoral fraud and announced plans to lead Brazil’s opposition from the United States. His claims come despite his own Liberal Party recognising Lula’s election victory.

Flávio Bolsonaro Claims Brazil Election Was Stolen

Bolsonaro initially described himself as Brazil’s legitimate president-elect in a statement published on social media, accusing Lula and judicial authorities of manipulating the election.

He alleged that irregularities during the presidential runoff had denied him victory, questioning the increase in Lula’s vote count between the first and second rounds.

However, Bolsonaro provided no verified evidence supporting his allegations. He subsequently deleted the original statement and published a revised version describing himself as Brazil’s rightful political leader.

Bolsonaro Arrives in Miami Amid Legal Investigations

Bolsonaro travelled to the United States with his family after leaving Brazil through Argentina and Ecuador.

His departure followed a Brazilian Supreme Court order requiring him to surrender his passports amid investigations involving alleged corruption and money laundering.

Bolsonaro denied wrongdoing and described the legal proceedings as politically motivated.

He thanked US President Donald Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei for assisting his departure.

Trump confirmed that Washington had permitted Bolsonaro to enter the United States but indicated he would not intervene in Brazil’s post-election dispute.

Lula’s Election Victory Recognised by Bolsonaro’s Party

Lula defeated Bolsonaro by more than four million votes in Sunday’s presidential runoff.

Brazil’s electoral authorities upheld the result, while Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party formally acknowledged Lula’s victory.

Bolsonaro nevertheless pledged to coordinate opposition activities from the United States, calling on political allies to continue challenging the government.

His announcement has intensified political tensions as Brazil prepares for Lula’s fourth presidential term.
