BJP Wins Six UP MLC Seats, SP Gains Ground

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured six seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections, while Akhilesh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party (SP) has made gains, taking four seats and leading in the remaining constituency. The results announced on October 28, 2026, come ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and indicate increased competition between the state’s two principal political parties.

BJP Wins Six Seats in Uttar Pradesh MLC Elections

The BJP retained its overall tally of six seats from the 2020 elections, winning four Teachers’ constituencies and two Graduates’ constituencies.

Its successful candidates included Dinesh Kumar Goyal from Meerut Graduates, Manvendra Pratap Singh from Agra Graduates, Umesh Dwivedi from Lucknow Teachers and Dhruv Kumar Tripathi from Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers.

The party also secured the Meerut Teachers and Bareilly-Moradabad Teachers constituencies.

Samajwadi Party Gains Ground in Lucknow and Varanasi

The Samajwadi Party won four seats, including Lucknow Graduates, Agra Teachers, Allahabad-Jhansi Graduates and Varanasi Teachers.

SP candidate Kanti Singh Patel defeated sitting BJP legislator Awanish Kumar Singh in Lucknow Graduates, while Akash Agrawal secured the Agra Teachers constituency.

Lal Bihari Yadav retained Varanasi Teachers, receiving 11,612 votes. The SP was also leading in Varanasi Graduates, where the final declaration was awaited.

Akhilesh Yadav Targets BJP Ahead of UP Elections

Akhilesh Yadav described the results as evidence of growing dissatisfaction with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government.

He also alleged electoral malpractice and administrative interference in Gorakhpur and Varanasi. These allegations have not been independently established.

In 2020, the BJP won six of these 11 seats, the SP secured three and independents won two.

The latest results show the SP expanding its representation while the BJP maintains its six-seat tally, ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
