FIR Against Jagan Reddy’s Convoy in Party Activist’s Death
Andhra Pradesh police have filed an FIR against YSRCP president and former chief minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, his driver Ramana Reddy, and several close aides, after a party activist was fatally run over by a vehicle in the convoy. The deceased, Cheeli Singaiah, aged 65, was a devoted party worker who had gathered along with others to greet Jagan on June 18 near Guntur.
The tragic incident occurred as Singaiah attempted to shower flowers on the passing convoy. New video evidence revealed that the vehicle which struck him was the black SUV carrying Jagan Mohan Reddy himself—not a trailing vehicle as initially assumed. The SUV did not stop after the accident, sparking public outrage and strong criticism from political opponents.
Convoy Mishap and Eyewitness Revelations
According to eyewitnesses and drone footage reviewed by the police, Singaiah was crushed under the convoy vehicle while trying to reach closer for a symbolic gesture of support. He died on the spot. Initially, the incident was considered an unfortunate accident, but new visual evidence and testimonies prompted police to revise the FIR under more serious charges, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and abetment.
FIR Names Jagan and Party Leaders
The FIR includes the names of Jagan Mohan Reddy, his driver, a former MP, ex-ministers, and several party leaders who were present in the convoy. Police are now collecting more footage, security records, and crowd management details to ascertain negligence and chain of responsibility. The driver has reportedly been taken into custody for further questioning.
Political Tensions Escalate
The incident has triggered a political firestorm, with rival parties accusing Jagan and his associates of reckless conduct and disregard for public safety. Critics have questioned the convoy’s failure to stop after the accident and the lack of immediate assistance to the victim. The victim’s wife lodged a formal complaint, leading to the FIR and escalation of charges.
The YSR Congress Party has defended its leadership, calling for a fair probe and warning against politicizing the tragedy. However, the gravity of the accusations has intensified the demand for accountability, with several civil society groups also expressing concern over the handling of political convoys and public gatherings.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are continuing their investigation and may summon additional party members for questioning. The legal implications for those named in the FIR, especially Jagan Mohan Reddy, remain to be seen as the investigation unfolds.
