Fertiliser Output Steady Despite West Asia Crisis

The government has said India’s fertiliser supply remains stable despite the West Asia crisis, with domestic urea production nearly matching last year’s level and fresh imports secured ahead of the Kharif season.

Domestic Urea Production Reaches 37.49 Lakh Tonnes

India produced 37.49 lakh tonnes of urea during March-April, close to the output recorded in the same period last year. The production included 16.49 lakh tonnes in March and 21 lakh tonnes in April.

The recovery in April helped stabilise supplies after concerns over disruption linked to the West Asia crisis and global energy market volatility. Urea remains India’s most widely used fertiliser and is critical for the upcoming sowing season.

Government Secures 37 Lakh Tonnes Urea Imports

To meet the expected shortfall before the Kharif season, the government has secured around 37 lakh tonnes of imported urea through global tenders.

Officials said fertiliser availability has remained strong during the crisis period. Total domestic fertiliser production stood at 62.37 lakh tonnes in March-April, while imports added another 15.39 lakh tonnes to the supply chain.

Kharif Fertiliser Supply Under Review

The government is also monitoring the availability of other key fertilisers and raw materials. Domestic production during March-April included 4.79 lakh tonnes of DAP, 12.69 lakh tonnes of NPK and 7.40 lakh tonnes of Single Super Phosphate.

A separate global tender has also been floated for 19 lakh tonnes of phosphatic fertilisers. The move is aimed at ensuring farmers have adequate access to crop nutrients during the Kharif season, despite global supply uncertainty.
