Europe Braces For Prolonged Heatwave

A prolonged heatwave is affecting several parts of Europe, with temperatures nearing 40°C in some countries and authorities issuing health, transport and public safety warnings. The extreme weather is expected to continue for several days as hot air from North Africa pushes across the continent.

Europe Heatwave Brings 40°C Temperatures

Several European countries are facing intense heat as temperatures rise close to 40°C. Italy issued red alerts for multiple cities, including Rome and Milan, as authorities warned residents to avoid unnecessary exposure during peak afternoon hours.

Spain also recorded severe heat conditions, with its weather agency warning of temperatures around 40°C in parts of the Iberian Peninsula and Mallorca. Heat alerts remained in place across several regions as residents and tourists used fans, shade and water to cope with the conditions.

France And Germany Issue Heat Warnings

France reported transport disruptions as high temperatures affected rail operations. The national rail operator cancelled several intercity services and warned that heat could damage railway infrastructure.

Germany also faced high temperatures, with warnings issued in several areas. Outdoor events were affected in some cities, while storms following the heat disrupted public gatherings and sporting schedules.

Climate Change Linked To Extreme Heat

Meteorologists said the heatwave was linked to a high-pressure system carrying hot air from the Sahara region. Such systems can trap warm air for days, creating prolonged heat conditions over large areas.

Climate experts have repeatedly warned that Europe is experiencing more frequent and intense heatwaves as global temperatures rise. Authorities have urged people, especially the elderly, children and those with health conditions, to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight and follow official heat advisories.
