DMK Ministers Senthilbalaji, Ponmudy Step Down After Court Criticism
The political landscape in Tamil Nadu witnessed a major shake-up as Ministers V. Senthilbalaji and K. Ponmudy submitted their resignations following scathing observations by the judiciary questioning their continuance in office.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced that “K. Ponmudy and V. Senthilbalaji have tendered their resignations, which I have accepted.” He further clarified that the Governor has been informed of the decision, bringing an end to the controversy that had been brewing over the two ministers’ positions in the Cabinet.
The resignations come in the wake of serious court interventions. The Supreme Court recently made stern observations against Ponmudy’s reinstatement as Minister for Higher Education after his conviction in a disproportionate assets case. Meanwhile, Senthilbalaji’s tenure had been under the scanner ever since his arrest in June 2023 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a money laundering case. Despite his incarceration, he continued to remain a minister without portfolio, raising concerns over constitutional propriety and political ethics.

Judicial pronouncements forced the ruling DMK government to take decisive action. The Madras High Court had earlier expressed displeasure over Senthilbalaji’s continuation, observing that it “sends a wrong signal to the society.” The Supreme Court’s severe comments on Ponmudy’s reappointment compounded the pressure, making resignations inevitable.
In a significant move to defuse the growing criticism, Chief Minister Stalin said, “It is my policy that the DMK government will always respect court verdicts. I have accepted the resignations accordingly.”

While Senthilbalaji’s arrest pertained to allegations dating back to his tenure as Transport Minister during 2011-16, Ponmudy’s legal troubles stemmed from a 2011 corruption case, where a trial court recently convicted him and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment.
Both cases had become political flashpoints, with opposition parties accusing the DMK of shielding tainted ministers. The court remarks amplified these allegations, highlighting a growing demand for higher accountability among elected representatives.
