Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh Gets Extension
The Central government has approved a one-year extension for Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, allowing him to continue in office until October 31, 2027, or until further orders, whichever comes earlier. The decision was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Saturday, October 24, 2026, ahead of the scheduled completion of his tenure.
Rajesh Kumar Singh Gets Extension Until October 2027
Singh, a 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, was scheduled to complete his two-year tenure on October 31, 2026.
The extension was approved through relaxation of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-Cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.
Singh assumed office as India’s 40th Defence Secretary on November 1, 2024, succeeding Giridhar Aramane.
Defence Secretary Also Holds Additional DRDO Charge
Since May 31, 2026, Singh has also held additional charge as Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
His extended tenure comes as the Defence Ministry pursues major reforms, including integrated theatre commands, indigenous weapons development and greater private-sector participation in defence manufacturing.
These initiatives form part of India’s broader efforts to strengthen military capabilities and reduce dependence on imported defence equipment.
Rajesh Kumar Singh’s Administrative Career
Before becoming Defence Secretary, Singh served as Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) between April 2023 and August 2024.
He previously headed the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying and held senior administrative positions in the Ministry of Urban Development.
During his career in Kerala, Singh also served in important roles covering finance and urban development.
The latest extension ensures continuity in the Defence Ministry’s administrative leadership during ongoing military modernisation and defence-sector reforms.
