Congress Support For TVK Sparks DMK Anger
The DMK has sharply criticised the Congress after signs emerged that the party may support Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu, exposing fresh tension within the INDIA bloc after the state election results.
DMK Slams Congress Over TVK Alliance
DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai accused the Congress of political betrayal, saying the party won five seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections only because it contested in alliance with the DMK. He claimed the Congress would have failed to open its account without DMK support.
The remarks came after Congress leaders indicated support for TVK leader Vijay, whose party emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu with 108 seats, short of the 118-seat majority mark.
Congress Backs Vijay For Tamil Nadu Government
The Congress Political Affairs Committee has decided to support Vijay’s TVK in forming what it described as a secular government. Congress leaders said the decision was aimed at preventing the BJP or its allies from gaining influence in Tamil Nadu politics.
TVK has already refused support from the BJP, which won one seat, citing ideological differences. Vijay is now expected to seek outside support to form the next government.
INDIA Bloc Faces Tamil Nadu Strain
The DMK questioned the Congress move by pointing to Vijay’s public thanks to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the election results. Saravanan argued that the INDIA bloc was formed on ideological grounds and that Congress must explain its support for TVK.
The developments have brought internal differences within the opposition alliance into the open, especially in Tamil Nadu, where the DMK and Congress were long-time partners. With TVK now at the centre of government formation efforts, the Congress decision could reshape state politics and test the unity of the national opposition bloc.
