Congress Says Jawaharlal Nehru’s Legacy Is Being Distorted

The Congress has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of attempting to “deny, denigrate and distort” the contributions of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Speaking on Nehru’s 136th birth anniversary, party leaders said the government was engaged in altering historical narratives and downplaying Nehru’s role in shaping modern India’s democratic and institutional framework.

Leaders Highlight Nehru’s Contributions

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party chief Sonia Gandhi paid tributes to Nehru, recalling his work in building key institutions, promoting scientific inquiry and establishing the foundations of parliamentary democracy. They said recent omissions and narrative shifts in official statements and events indicate an attempt to minimise Nehru’s influence in India’s early nation-building phase.

Congress Urges Defence Of Historical Legacy

The party said it plans to counter what it calls “revisionist efforts” by strengthening educational outreach and public messaging on Nehru’s contributions. Congress leaders added that protecting historical accuracy is essential for preserving democratic values, and warned that political motives should not guide reinterpretation of India’s constitutional history.
