Congress Questions Prasar Bharati Chief’s Resignation

The Congress party has alleged that the sudden resignation of former Prasar Bharati chairman Navneet Kumar Sehgal raises serious questions about corruption and political management at the top levels of government. Sehgal, a retired Indian Administrative Service officer, stepped down from his post earlier this month, about a year before his term was due to end.

Allegations of Corruption and “Musical Chairs”

At a press conference, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera criticised the timing and circumstances of Sehgal’s exit. He said the party’s concern stems from reports about an Income Tax department dossier that allegedly named Sehgal as part of a Rs 112-crore kickback network in tenders for government schemes in Uttar Pradesh. The Congress claims that instead of facing scrutiny, Sehgal was given a new, high-profile position, a pattern it calls “political musical chairs.”

The party has also linked the situation with speculation that Sehgal might be moved to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to replace an official recently under scrutiny, a claim that has not been confirmed by the government.

Sehgal’s Response and Context

Sehgal has denied the allegations, stating that the matter was examined by the tax department and explanations were provided. He maintains that the issue has been resolved and that the allegations are unfounded. The government has not publicly commented on the specifics of the Congress allegations.

The matter highlights ongoing political debates about accountability and senior bureaucratic appointments in public institutions.
