China Rejects Nepal Claim Over Flood Cause
China has rejected claims circulating in Nepal that the catastrophic cross-border floods were triggered by the collapse of a “geological disaster dam” on the Chinese side, calling the allegation false. Beijing has also denied accusations that it failed to provide an adequate early warning before the disaster.
China Rejects Nepal Dam Collapse Claim
The Chinese Embassy in Nepal said reports blaming a dam collapse in Tibet for the flooding were inaccurate and urged both countries to focus on rescue and relief rather than assigning blame.
China said an earthquake or earthquake-like glacial collapse and subsequent mudslides occurred around the Nepal-China border on August 26, causing casualties and extensive damage on both sides.
Beijing also rejected claims that Chinese authorities withheld information that could have helped Nepal prepare for the surge.
Scientific Assessments Point to Glacial Collapse
Preliminary scientific and satellite assessments indicate that the disaster involved a massive collapse of ice, rock and debris in the Himalayan region, which generated a powerful surge through river systems along the Nepal-Tibet border.
Seismic signals initially interpreted as an earthquake have also been examined alongside evidence of glacial and landslide activity.
The precise sequence and location of the initial collapse continue to be investigated, meaning claims assigning responsibility to a failed Chinese dam remain unverified.
Nepal Flood Death Toll Continues to Rise
The disaster has killed more than 160 people across Nepal and Tibet, while more than 1,000 people have been reported missing as rescue operations continue.
Villages, roads, bridges, hydropower facilities and border infrastructure have been destroyed or severely damaged.
Chinese authorities are also monitoring newly formed upstream barrier lakes for the risk of secondary flooding, while Nepal has deployed security forces, helicopters and rescue teams across affected districts.
