Centre Clears ToR For Velimalai Hydro Project
The Centre has granted Terms of Reference clearance for the proposed 1,100 MW Velimalai Pumped Storage Hydro Electric Project in Tamil Nadu’s Kanniyakumari district, allowing the project to move to the detailed environmental study stage.
Velimalai Pumped Storage Hydro Project
The project has been proposed by the Tamil Nadu Green Energy Corporation Limited and is planned across Alur and Velimalai villages in Kalkulam taluk. It is estimated to cost Rs 5,624 crore and will cover 159.25 hectares of land.
The project is designed as an off-stream pumped storage scheme with an underground powerhouse. It will have four units of 275 MW each and is expected to generate power for around six hours daily during peak demand.
Tamil Nadu Green Energy Push
The Velimalai project is part of Tamil Nadu’s wider effort to strengthen renewable energy storage and grid stability. Pumped storage systems help store surplus power and release it during high-demand periods, making them important for managing solar and wind energy.
The project will also involve nearly seven hours of pumping operation to recycle water between the upper and lower reservoirs.
Environmental Studies And Public Hearing
The Terms of Reference clearance is not final environmental approval. It allows the preparation of an Environmental Impact Assessment and public hearing process before further clearance.
The Expert Appraisal Committee has raised ecological concerns, including the project’s proximity to the Kanniyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary eco-sensitive zone and the use of a non-perennial natural stream. The ministry has sought detailed studies on water availability, downstream flows, biodiversity, fish diversity, muck disposal and forest land diversion.
