BYD to Establish Electric Vehicle Manufacturing Plant Near Hyderabad
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) giant BYD is set to establish its first manufacturing facility in India near Hyderabad, Telangana, marking a major step in the company’s expansion plans within the growing Indian EV market. The Telangana government has identified three prospective locations close to Hyderabad, and BYD is currently in the process of evaluating these sites. Once finalized, a formal agreement is expected to be signed, making it one of the largest private investments in India’s EV sector to date.
600,000 Vehicles and Battery Plant by 2032
The planned facility aims to produce up to 600,000 vehicles annually by the year 2032. In addition to vehicle production, the project also includes a 20-gigawatt battery manufacturing plant, positioning the site as a comprehensive EV production hub. The investment is projected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs while fostering the development of an automotive ecosystem around Hyderabad.
Boost to Local Manufacturing and Affordability
At present, BYD imports its vehicles into the Indian market, leading to higher price tags due to import duties. The shift to local manufacturing is expected to significantly reduce costs, making BYD vehicles more affordable and competitive in India’s price-sensitive auto market. This move is also aligned with the company’s global strategy to scale operations and expand market presence.
Telangana’s EV-Friendly Ecosystem
The decision to invest in Telangana is being attributed to the state’s progressive electric vehicle policies. These include full exemption from road tax and registration fees on electric vehicles until December 31, 2026. Telangana’s EV policy, designed to attract global manufacturers and promote clean transportation, has played a key role in drawing BYD’s attention.
The entry of a major global EV player like BYD is anticipated to spur further investment in EV infrastructure, including charging networks and component manufacturing. It also strengthens India’s journey toward becoming a major hub for sustainable mobility solutions.
