Brendon McCullum Leaves England Test Coach Role

Brendon McCullum will leave his role as England men’s Test head coach after four years but will continue leading the country’s ODI and T20I teams. The decision follows a difficult period for England in red-ball cricket.

McCullum Leaves England Test Coaching Role

McCullum took charge of England’s Test team in 2022 and worked alongside captain Ben Stokes to introduce an aggressive style of cricket widely known as “Bazball”.

England produced several memorable victories during the early stages of their partnership. However, results declined during the latter part of McCullum’s tenure, increasing pressure on the Test leadership.

McCullum said he was proud of the team’s achievements and described coaching the Test side as a privilege. However, he admitted he was “gutted not to be continuing” while respecting the decision.

England Test Defeats Prompt Change

England suffered a 4-1 Ashes series defeat in Australia before losing their home Test series against New Zealand 2-1.

The New Zealand defeat was England’s first home loss in a Test series of three or more matches since 2012. The results prompted the England and Wales Cricket Board to seek a change before the next Ashes campaign.

McCullum completed his Test coaching tenure with 27 victories, 20 defeats and two draws across 49 matches.

McCullum Continues as White-Ball Coach

The former New Zealand captain will remain responsible for England’s ODI and T20I teams. England recently climbed to the top of the men’s T20I rankings after reaching the semi-finals of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

England must now appoint a new Test head coach and captain following Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket. The incoming leadership will oversee the team’s preparations for its next Test series and the 2027 Ashes.
