BJP Wins West Bengal After Historic Breakthrough

The Bharatiya Janata Party has secured a major victory in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress government’s long hold over the state. The result marks a major political breakthrough for the BJP in a state where it had never previously formed the government.

BJP Wins Control Of West Bengal

The BJP crossed the majority mark in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly after leading or winning enough seats to form the next government. The result gives Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party its first opportunity to govern West Bengal, a state that has remained outside its control despite years of political campaigning.

Mamata Banerjee Faces Major Setback

The result is a major setback for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, which had been in power in West Bengal since 2011. Banerjee has been one of Modi’s strongest political critics and had positioned herself as a major opposition figure at the national level.

West Bengal Result Boosts BJP

The victory is expected to strengthen the BJP’s political standing midway through Modi’s third term as Prime Minister. The party had fallen short of a majority in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and had to rely on allies to form the central government, making the West Bengal win politically significant.

State Election Results Reshape Opposition

The West Bengal result comes as governments were also voted out in other states. In Tamil Nadu, actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam made a major breakthrough, while in Kerala, the Congress-led opposition defeated the ruling Left government. BJP also retained Assam for a third consecutive term.
